Sen. Cano statement on Nashville school shooting

 

            STATE HOUSE – Sen. Sandra Cano, Chairwoman of the Senate Education Committee, released the following statement concerning the horrific school shooting that took place at a private school in Nashville today:

            “This new normal of watching our children being slaughtered and hurt in their schools, spaces that are supposed to be safe havens and sanctuaries, is an aspect of our society that I refuse to accept.  We are beyond the point of recognizing that we have a serious problem in this country with children and gun violence and the excuses that prevent real and meaningful change that will keep our students safe need to end.  My heart, thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and loved ones of this horrendous and unnecessary attack and as the Chairwoman of the Senate Education Committee, I will continue working toward the solutions that will end these heinous events so that our children remain safe in their schools, as they should be,” said Chairwoman Cano (D-Dist. 8, Pawtucket).

 

Former Vice President Mike Pence is officially running for president in 2024. Pence filed the paperwork to enter the race today, joining a growing field of candidates vying for the Republican nomination. Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie and North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum are also expected to officially announce their bids this week.        The Saudi Arabian government says it will cut oil production this summer and that will likely push gas prices higher in the U.S. The largest oil producer in OPEC will cut production by 1 million barrels a day from 10 to 9 million. That's happening despite OPEC saying it wouldn't change production plans for the rest of 2023.        The bodies of all three unaccounted for men have been found at the site of the apartment building that collapsed in Iowa. Police say the remains of Ryan Hitchcock were found Sunday, and Daniel Prien's [[ PREE-in ]] were recovered early Monday in Davenport. The city announced over the weekend Branden Colvin Sr.'s remains were located on Saturday.        Apple stock hit an all time high earlier today as it launches it's own mixed-reality headset. The company is announcing new updates and products at its yearly Worldwide Developers Conference. Shares of Apple have been up over by one-and-a-half-percent throughout Monday's session on Wall Street.        Community members in Memphis are expected to gather downtown Monday night to commemorate what would have been Tyre Nichols' 30th birthday. Nichols died following a beating by police officers during a traffic stop earlier this year. Five officers have been charged with murder.        "Your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man" is back on top at the box office. "Spider-Man -- Across the Spider-Verse" earned 120-and-a-half-million-dollars in its first weekend in theaters across the U.S. and Canada. The latest installment in the Spidey franchise scored the second-biggest opening of this year behind only "The Super Mario Brothers Movie" which made 146-million-dollars in its debut weekend.
